A very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all! What a super year it's been here at Discovery, with great surf and weather (most of the time!), loads of you surfing with us for the first time and many more coming back time and again, new locations (Blackpool Sands and Challaborough) and new courses - ASI Surf Instructor and SLSGB Beach Lifeguard, And all the other news on this page! Discovery Surf School arranged and hosted a free surfing competition for local children on the 19th of November. The event was extremely well attended and conditions were superb, which made for a hugely successful event. Martin was overwhelmed by support the event gained, “We have run these events in the past, but this year we had at least double the number of entrants (over 50) and a really strong competitive field, which included children who are competing on a national level. FREE Surfing Competition - Calling all local groms and regular surf clubbers, Discovery Surf School is hosting our annual surfing competition on Saturday the 19th of November. Entry is free and the divisions include Micro Groms (girls and boys under 10), Under 14's girls and boys and Pro Junior Girls and Boys (Under 21). There will be prizes and trophies/medals for the successful entrants, and as well as Discovery Surf School the competition is sponsored by Xcel, Triocean and Venus. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |  |
The free surfing event we organised for autistic children was a great success this weekend. Despite the rather blustery conditions several children enjoyed a one to one surf session with one of our experienced coaches. Alison Blake's son Adam was one of hardy bunch that came along; "Thank you so much for arranging this, Adam had a great time and it was so lovely to all get out as a family for a while :-)" Heidi Clover's son Sami also enjoyed his surfing, "THANK YOU! We have one very stoked little boy!" Chrissie Pollock's son Archie is one of our regular surfers and was stoked to get amongst it too, "I saw lots of stoked kids! Discovery Surf School are delighted to announce that we are hosting a FREE surfing event for autistic and disabled children on Sunday the 30th of October. Recently we received some grant funding enabling us to develop our surfing programme for autistic and disabled children. The morning event on the 30th of October has been made possible by this assistance, and will be the first such event that we have hosted ourselves. Spaces are limited, so please e-mail/call us to book a place. Each lesson is one to one and 45 minutes long, with all equipment provided. Discovery Surf Camp UPDATE - Surf Camp will be running during October Half Term - Monday to Thursday. You can book in for a 1, 2, 3, or 4 day course. It proved to be a really popular edition to Discovery Surf School's activities during the summer holidays and we're looking forward to next group of recruits to join in the fun! Wow, what a busy summer it's been! But such a great one - thanks to everyone who's joined in the fun - and there's lots more to come too. Next weekend - on the 4th of September, we're holding another HALF PRICE surfing lesson session for local residents. The sessions we ran over the summer with the AONB were so popular we've decided to put another date in the diary. New for 2011 is Discovery Surf Camp, based at Challaborough Bay. Surf Camp is action packed full of surfing and water activities where you’ll not only have lots of water time but also some dry work to help your surfing knowledge. Surf Camp has an emphasis on pupils gaining a qualification in surfing through the ASI (Academy of Surf Instructors) surfing program and having lots of fun! Pupils are supervised all day and all the equipment is provided. The main activity is surfing lessons. Other water activities include surf/water skills, basic lifeguard techniques, raft building and paddle tours. Dry work includes basic surf information, surf etiquette, techniques and video/photo analysis of your surfing. Meeting and picking up spot is at Challaborough Surf Shack (Park Dean, Challaborough Bay). The surfing part of the day is at Bigbury on-Sea (short walk), and the dry work/water activity is at Challaborough. 1 Day Surf Camp - £60 - 9:30am-3:30pm 2 Day Surf Camp - £115 – 9:30am-3:30pm Includes ASI Surf Safety & Awareness Assessment/Certificate. 4 Day Surf Camp – £195 - (9:30am-3:30pm) Includes: ASI Learn to Surf workbook +110% Surfing Techniques DVD + ASI Sea Safety and Awareness Certificate + ASI Surfing Certificate. Discovery Surf School are working with the Venus Riders to host the second annual Venus Riders Family Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) Championship at Blackpool Sands from 31st May to 3rd June. The free to enter competition is the perfect event for the whole family to enter, even those who’ve never tried SUP before. Contestants have to complete a 100 metre course at Blackpool Sands, near Dartmouth, South Devon. All entrants completing the course will receive a FREE Weird Fish T-shirt and will be entered into a prize draw to win some fantastic prizes supplied by the event’s sponsors including a £500 holiday cottage voucher from Helpful Holidays and other amazing prizes from Weird Fish, Xcel, Protest and Wiggle. More Info. The competition is open to everyone aged 8 and over and no experience is needed. Qualifying heats will take place daily between 10am and 12noon on Tuesday 31st May until Thursday 2nd June. The winners from the qualifying heats will progress to the semi-finals and grand final, which will take place on Friday 3rd June when the eventual winners for each age category will be crowned. Discovery Surf School with Lakeside Beauty hosted the first `Surf and Spa' Day in May. A fantastic time was had by the hens with some great surfing in the morning, followed by a buffet lunch, and it looks like Bucks Fizz in the jacuzzi was certainly a highlight! The afternoon was filled with spa treatments and using the facilities at Dartmouth Golf and Country Club. Friday April 1st saw Surfers Against Sewage and a horde of volunteers descend on Bigbury-on-Sea for the Motivocean Beach Clean. They managed to clear a lot of rubbish and the lucky volunteers were then treated to a surfing lesson from Discovery Surf School, and loads of fun was had by all. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |  |

Getting recognition for the quality of our coaching is always hugely appreciated by us, so it was very exciting when Martin was asked to coach the GB Junior Surfing Team this January. On a cold, sunny, 2 ft day at Fistral, Martin, joined by Matz Ginman-Trout and Micah Lester held a training session which combined classroom theory and video analysis of the Juniours surfing. "Martin, thanks again for your help over the weekend, I thought it was a great success, and I think the team could really learn a lot about technique from you." Saturday, October the 23rd saw Discovery Surf School host free a surfing competition for local Under 16 children. There were 4 divisions - Girls Under 12's and Under 16's and Boys Under 12's and Under 16's. It was a super day with a brilliant turn out from across the South Hams and Plymouth. The conditions were challenging but everyone did extremely well and all had huge smiles on their faces! The winners were for the Open Under 16’s, Kane Hunter from Plymouth; the Open Under 12’s was Joseph Harding from Aveton Gifford; the Girls Under 16’s was Ellen Harding from Aveton Gifford and the Girls Under 12’s was Eva Capps from Ringmore. Ellen Harding did particularly well, not only winning the Under 16 Girls but also coming 3rd in the Open Under 16’s Final. Well done to everyone! Each year Discovery Surf School teams up with Life Works, to bring the ‘Breaking the Barrier’ unique one-day event introducing youngsters, aged 8-25, with disabilities to the experience of surfing and the thrill of actually riding a wave. This years' event (Our 4th) was on the 18th of September 2010, and we had a FABULOUS day! The weather and surf was great, the kids absolutely loved it and we had a brilliant turn out. Thanks so much to everyone who was involved and helped make it such a special event. 2010 will be the fourth year Richard Hanlon has organised this event for the Devon-based charity Lifeworks with Discovery Surf School. “Normally autistic kids won’t even get wet, let alone have a go at surfing,” explains Richard. This event allows children with learning difficulties to surf in a safe but extraordinary environment. |  |
Discovery Surf School has recently been successful in securing £10,000 worth of funding from the South Devon Coastal Local Action Group to expand the training side of the business. The team at Discovery are very excited about the potential for expansion of the business as a result of the funding, which was sourced using Plymouth based grant finance specialist, The Biscuit Group. Surf Brain is a totally original concept and has been developed by Discovery Surf Media, the same team responsible for the 110% Surfing Techniques instructional DVD's. We've been very busy with lots of school groups enjoying surfing on their activity/enrichment weeks and After School clubs, and the great weather has brought lots of keen visitors to beautiful South Devon and South East Cornwall as well. August 2010 will see the release of Surf Brain - it's going to be a world first!
