Participants with Disabilities

Discovery Surf School has become renowned as a specialist centre for taking participants with disabilities (autistic, partially sighted, downs syndrome, physical disabilities for example).  For the past 5 years we have been working with LifeWorks and Surf Relief, and have an annual surf event for autistic and other special needs children.  As well as the event we also do lessons throughout the year for people with disabilities which is part funded - please contact us for more information.

Recently we also did lessons with partially sighted and blind children.  In the pictures here Rory is taking his first ever waves - an incredible feat as he is blind.

The sessions we do with participants with disabilities are very special and we often get really heart warming feedback about the enjoyment that comes from surfing.  Here Archie's Mum tells us about their experience:

We really are very grateful to the guys at Discovery Surf School. We'd never have tried surfing with Archie (severely autistic, non-verbal, challenging behaviours and limited awareness of danger- surfing didn't exactly leap out as a potential activity) without the surfers going out of their way to encourage participation.
He gets a real buzz from it - he's spent a lot of this afternoon looking at photos of him surfing. I always think his autism isn't such a problem in itself, it's a pain when it stops him being able to do things, especially fun stuff, so these sorts of activities make a real difference to his life and all our lives.
It seems like a small thing, but when I became a Mum I imagined doing things that were fun with the kids, not hours of autism therapies - I feel that this year, with horse riding and surfing and lots of trips out we're finally getting the balance right.

“We have used other surf schools before but Discovery Surf led the way as they are friendly, excellent with the kids and adults.  They also understand children who need challenging and celebration of their individual successes.  A fantastic week was had by all, a definite for next year.”
